Maternal Substance Use Disorders
Fact Sheet
Substance Use Disorders and Maternal Mental Health
In this factsheet, we examine how Substance Use Disorder (SUD) during pregnancy—including alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and opioids—affects maternal and infant health, highlights high rates of co-occurring mental health conditions, gaps in pregnancy-specific treatment, and the importance of integrated obstetric, mental health, and addiction care to improve outcomes for mothers and babies.
Training
Maternal Substance Use Disorders 101 Webinars
Hosted quarterly, learn how to recognize and effectively respond to substance use concerns during pregnancy, early parenthood, and with the birthing parent/child dyad. Considerations related to treatment and supporting the parent-child relationship will be discussed. The training is designed for providers, administrators, and public health employees, though all are welcome.

Field Guide
Addressing Perinatal Substance Use
This guide offers comprehensive, evidence-based resources to support perinatal patients and families, equip healthcare providers with practical tools, and help hospitals implement sustainable quality improvement initiatives to improve outcomes for both parent and baby.

Screening Tool
Behavioral Health Risks Screening Tool For Pregnant Women
The 5Ps screening tool poses questions related to substance use by women’s parents, peers, partner, during
her pregnancy and in her past. These are non-confrontational questions that elicit genuine responses
which can be useful in evaluating the need for a more complete assessment and possible treatment for
substance abuse.
